Multi Users in Middle Earth (MUME) – What is it?
Mume is an online text-based game based upon Lord of the Rings that has run since 1992. If you ever played those old “Choose your own Adventure” books, where you turned to whichever page your decision led you, rolled dice to fight monsters you encountered (and perhaps fudged the odd dice roll) this may feel familiar – but the computer does all the work for you.
On top of that, you have many more choices, can play with friends, either as companions in a fellowship, or engage them in cut throat battles to the death.
You are essentially living within a book – although over time mapping and visual aspects have become if not essential to the game, then a major component to how people interact with the world of Mume.
This was not always the case. Both Mume and the way people have related to it have evolved over time. A community has developed, and after 30 years or so, generations of players have come and gone – though some of the old guard still do wander Middle Earth. imparting both wisdom and devastation in unpredictable portions.
There is much old lore to be shared around the table at the Sign of the Prancing Pony Inn. Sometimes a good story gets in the way of the truth, but both are part of the fun.
If this is all new to you, I hope you will be intrigued. If you’ve been playing for years, I hope you’ll find this interesting.
